Soil Testing

India is an agricultural country, 70% of India’s population is dependent on agriculture to earn a living. After independence, there has been a rapid increase in the population and there is an even greater shortage of food grains, due to which the Green Revolutionwas born, There was a huge increase in the production of cereals, mainly due to the introduction of new varieties, the adjustment of modern techniques and the use of chemical substances, it was seen that the use of chemical sources started becoming indiscriminate due to which the environment was polluted and the fertilizer power of the land started being laughed. Continuing till date, which is affecting the health of all living beings along with the soil, Due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers, weedicides, insecticides and pesticides in agriculture, the toxicity of the land increased due to which many beneficial bacteria died and the land became unfertile as well as turning into a dead state, Without soil testing, the farmer is using unnecessary expensive chemicals in the fields, due to which the farmers are also facing economic losses and there is a decline in the yield, just as humans and animals need a balanced diet (nutrients) in the same way. Plants also need nutrients and we get these nutrients from the soil, soil is an essential component in crop production, which provides nutrients to the plants. Therefore it is necessary that the health of the soil is good and the essential elements are available to the plants and it is also suitable for the growth of bacteria, it has been known from scientific tests that 16 nutrients are necessary for proper growth in every plant. In the absence of soil test, the farmer uses the same nutrient-rich fertilizer continuously. Which is already in sufficient quantity in the soil, the crop yield is also adversely affected by the excess of nutrients, so in order to increase the productivity of crops in the present conditions, it is necessary that the soil test of the field should be done from time to time and Based on the results, the use of the recommended amount of fertilizers should be ensured in a balanced way, so that the fertility of the soil is maintained and as a result, increase in yield can be achieved along with reducing the cost of cultivation.

Benefits of soil testing

  • Detects nutrient deficiency.
  • Knows the exact amount of nutrients to be used.
  • Knows the appropriate amount of fertilizer required.
  • The cost of cultivation is low, it saves money.
  • Increases yield.
  • The soil remains healthy.
  • Ground water is not contaminated.
  • Increases the income of farmers.
  • Improves crop health. Detects soil’s pH level.

How to take soil sample

  • The first thing to do is to clear the grass from the ground.
  • Prepare V shaped pits about 6 inches deep in 4 to 5 places and take soil samples from them.
  • Collect and mix the soil taken from 4 to 5 places at one place.
  • Now prepare 1 mix sample of about half a kilo (500 grams) of that soil.
  • If the sample contains pebbles or grass etc., clean it and keep it to dry in the shade for some time. Keep this soil sample filled in a clean cloth bag along with the name of the farmer, the name of the farmer’s father, the name of the field, Land record number, the address, your name, the name of the father, the mobile number, inside the label of the sample.

Precautions while taking soil samples

  • Do not take soil sample from a place where there is already a pit.
  • Do not take samples from near the obstruction of the farm and the road adjoining the farm and from where the fence is placed.
  • Fill all the details in the label and information slip.
  • Fill the sample from the ground 3 to 5 days before giving the sample.
  • Be careful not to give wet soil samples.
  • If the soil is too wet, leave it to dry in the shade for 3 to 5 days, then give the sample.
  • If the sample is to be taken from standing crop, then take the soil sample from the empty space between the rows of plants.
